Mark Dunn Windows Workflow Foundation

Introduction to Windows Workflow Foundation
=========================================================================================
Windows Workflow Foundation was released with .NET 3.0 and enables developers to visually
define processes in either a sequential (think flowchart) or state machine (think UML
activity or state diagram) project. The ability to abstract, manage and reuse a business
process is a very powerful and flexible tool for developers. In this session, Mark will
cover the fundamentals of what WF is and where you might use it. He will demonstrate
using the development tools and several of the interesting activities included out of
the box.

Windows Workflow Foundation Persistance and Scalability
=========================================================================================
The workflow runtime has the ability to associate a persistence service with a workflow
instance which will be activated if the WF instance becomes idle. Learning to work
with persistence is the key to building scalable workflow solutions. This is especially
critical if you have long running workflows that include human interaction. In this
talk, Mark will give you a brief overview of Workflow to establish what it is and why
you would be interested in working with it followed by a deeper dive into using
the SQL Server Persistance services that come out of the box with WF. By default,
persistance isn't activiated. There are a few things you need to do for set up and
activiation and this talk will clue you in.

Windows Workflow Foundation Policy and Rules
=========================================================================================
Mark will cover a brief introduction to workflow to explain where it fits and why you
would interested in this new toy as a developer. Windows Workflow Foundation
also includes the ability to define rule driven workflows with a powerful rules engine.
Mark will dig into the rules engine and explain how forward chaining works, how
you can take control of rule evaluation yourself and how to use the various attributes
that control how the rules engine makes its decisions. You'll also learn the secret
of making dynamic changes to rules for a running workflow.

Sql Saturday #8

SQLSaturday #8
will be held October 25, 2008 in Orlando. We're going to run six,
possibly seven SQL tracks, plus an additional two tracks devoted solely
to Sharepoint. We're partnering with the local Sharepoint group on
this, we'll handle the logistics, they'll work on finding the
Sharepoint speakers and driving attendance to those tracks. There's
probably a little crossover between SQL and Sharepoint, but I would
guess that most will be interested in one or the other. Partnering made
easy because SQL user group guy Mike Antonovich is also the leader of
the Sharepoint group (and author of a Sharepoint book,
a plug for a friend). Call for speakers is open and we're asking
everyone to submit at least two proposals, one of which should be on
SQL 2008, We want to build a very good mix of content.

Mike Culver joined Amazon Web Services after almost eight years in evangelism at Microsoft, where he saw .NET move from a provocative idea to the preeminent development platform for serious development. During that time, Mike managed a team of evangelists in Microsoft’s Developer Division (and later in Developer and Platform Evangelism) that were responsible for a number of high-profile implementations of .NET, ranging from innovative Compact Framework applications for devices to complex mission-critical applications such as the City of London’s Traffic Congestion Project.

When: October 3, 2007 @ 3:00 PM

Where: Eau Gallie Public Library

It's All About The Tools – (It’s AATT! ) Episode One!

When I was a youth, watching my Dad tune up our car… there was a spark plug way in the back and it was really tough to get at using a traditional socket wrench. Then he pulled out this special tool that had a bend in it for just such a situation. My Dad said… “When you have the right tool for the job, it makes it easy… without the right tool you will struggle and struggle”. How true is that? Sometimes as a developer we struggle, needlessly… if we only knew there was a tool that did a certain function. Many times I will see a tool and say “if I had only know about that I would have been done so much quicker”. Many times in an MSDN Event I will show a tool as part of a larger presentation topic and some folks will come up to me afterwards and say that was the best part because that tool solves a specific problem they had.
Did you ever feel inundated with developer tools? Did you ever feel you are missing something that could make your life easier as a developer and as a power user? There are so many tools available to choose from and it keeps getting tougher to keep up with. Tool familiarity continues to be one of the top developers challenges. This series of seminars is all about tools for developers, by developers.
Welcome to this new, fresh and original ground breaking MSDN seminar series from Russ’ Tool Shed called … It’s All About The Tools. This is the first installment of many more to come. This session is tech talk about tools for developers. Join Microsoft Florida Developer Evangelist Russ Fustino for his take on what's hot in the developer's toolbox. There's something here for everyone, from beginners to experts. Oh, by the way, you might want to put your hard hat on for this one!
Don’t miss this event. It’s where It’s AATT! J In this first session you will see demonstrations the following tools and a few more surprises… Fiddler Web Stress Tool IE Developer Toolbar Visual Studio IDE tools
• code convertors
• obfuscator
• snippit manager (and the snippet tool in vista as a bonus)
• toolbox scratch pad
• Refactor
Visual Studio Express tool’s
Visual Web Developer Express:
• Web Administrator
• Membership and personalization
Visual Express C#
• XNA Express
Live Services
• Spaces
• Live Writer
• MSDN article on search provider (2007.08)
Silverlight 1.0/1.1 XAML Designer (Expression Blend) Community Tool Web Site Review and top downloaded SDK’s
• GotDotNet: http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/ide/
• MSDN Dev Center: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/downloads/powertoys/
• CodePlex home: http://www.codeplex.com/Default.aspx
• Download center and more!

Enterprise Library Validation Application Block

Enterprise Library Validation Application Block

Any application that accepts input either from users or from other systems must ensure that the information is valid in terms of some set of rules that you specify. For example, when processing an order, you may need to check that a customer's phone number has the correct number of digits, or that a date falls within a particular range. In addition, if the validation fails, you may need to send an error message that explains what is wrong.

The Enterprise Library Validation Application Block provides a library of classes, called validators, that supplies the code for validating .NET Framework data types. For example, one validator checks for null strings and another validator checks that a number falls within a specified range.

Connecting Applications with WCF

Most applications of any scale need to make remote calls. Whether you need to call across processes from your smart client to a web service, from your web server to your application server, or from one client to another in a peer to peer fashion, WCF supports any kind of remote messaging or communications scenario. It doesn’t just stop at remote calls either, but also supports multiple forms of security, distributed transactions, queuing, concurrency, callbacks and many other things that are needed in full blown enterprise scale Service Oriented Architecture applications. This talk will show you the basics of using WCF to connect applications. You will learn what WCF is all about, how it relates to other remoting technologies, how to create a service, how to connect a client, and will expose you to the other many facets of WCF.
